Capiz Shell Earrings

Capiz Shell Earrings

Handcrafted by artisans in the Philippines, these delicate wafer-thin earrings are made from capiz, the thin, naturally off-white colored shell of clams. First artisans wash the shells with soap and water. Next, they soak the shells in a weak acid solution. After the shells have dried, they are cut into shapes and edged with silver metal wire. The piece is then smoked to achieve the lovely burnished appearance. A finishing coat of varnish completes this labor intensive process.

Before glass windows became available in the Philippines, capiz was used for windows in houses.
