Galimoto Push Toy

Galimoto Push Toy

We call this push toy "Galimoto" which means car in Chichewa, the national language of Malawi in Africa.  This whimsical toy delights all ages.  I have had customers come in again and again to buy them for the toddlers and the cyclists in their lives.

Made of recycled products and pairs well with our storybook;  Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams

This ingeniously crafted “galimoto” push-toy bicycle rider is created by artisans of the Chuma Wires workshop based in the Dandora area of Nairobi, Kenya. Developed by group founder, Samuel Macharia, the galimoto is made of shaped wire wrapped in fabric strips. The cyclist’s legs move in a circular motion as the toy is pushed along. Housed in Macharia’s small but efficient home, Chuma Wires provides valuable work for artisans who have little or no other opportunities for employment in this marginal section of Kenya’s sprawling capital.
