Arrival - Fair Trade India Tour April 10 2014, 0 Comments

Our small village Fair Trade tour took place in and around the geographical heart of North India, Delhi, Jaipur & Agra, the three historical & cultural regions of North India, known as the Golden Triangle. We traveled northeast to Najibabad and far to the northwest desert city of Barmer to visit an artisan villages just a few kilometers from the Pakistan border.

One World Fair Trade joined Handmade Expressions for a two week tour to visit the villages, homes and workshops of several of our artisan groups. We learned about craft processes and saw products in their original context. Most importantly, we interacted with artisans, shared meals and had conversations that ultimately will connect the products and the people that make them with you, our customer.

After departing from San Francisco and a short stop in Newark NJ, we traveled northeast, crossing the Atlantic Ocean and flying over London, Berlin, Moscow, Beirut, Dubai, Afghanistan, Islamabad and Pakistan to arrive in Delhi at 9:00 pm after almost 24hrs of continuous travel.

Here in the capital of India, we were greeted at the airport by our kind and gracious hosts, Manish Gupta from Handmade Expressions, Devendra Dhariwal from SETU, our well-seasoned travel coordinator, Kelly Campbell from The Village Experience and our kind and professional local travel guide, Harshit Nagar. This would be the crew that would guide us on our Fair Trade India adventure over the next two weeks.

In addition to myself and Annette representing One World Fair Trade, we were joined by Tammy Marshall and Mendy Harrell from Come Together Trading, Kara Roguly from Global Exchange, Sara Russell from The Bridge, Nicole Main Long from Global Gifts, Sarah Lane from Baksheesh, Lorelei VerLee and Nicole Moore from Creative Women of the World, Erin Fergusson, David Bolotsky, Barbara Becker and their two boys Drew & Evan from Uncommon Goods, and Rashmi Dhariwal, Katharine Harlow, Anjali Tanwar and Riya Sharma from SETU - Handmade Expressions’ India Team.
